Lake Kerkini is one of the premier birding sites in Greece, situated along the migratory path for birds en route to the Aegean Sea, the Balkan region, the Black Sea, and beyond. It has a breeding population of the endangered Dalmatian Pelican. and also White Pelicans. Thousands of Great Cormorants nest and roost in the riparian forest, along with heron and egret species, and the surrounding countryside has many varieties of passerine birds, including Bee Eater, Penduline Tit and Cirl Bunting.
